Abstract: Introduction: A lower bone density is suspected prevalent among female schizophrenia patients. This study is to explore the association of bone density in female schizophrenic patients and the ADRA2A gene. Methods: This is a multi-center, investigator-initiated, naturalistic study project. We enrolled 90 female inpatients meeting DSM-IV criteria for schizophrenia or schizoaffective disorder from two psychia-tric hospitals in Taiwan. Bone density, indicated in BUA, was measured for all subjects by using QUS-2 over calcaneal bone. Descriptive data of age, sex, height, body weight, medical or surgical past history, activity level, smoking and the antipsychotics used in the past two years were collected. Four candidate genes including ADRA1A, ADRA2A, ADRB3, HTR2A were genotyped by PCR or DHPLC. Results: After controlling for gender, age, smoking status, education level, BMI, daily energy intake, and the other 3 genotypes, the absolute regression coefficient of BUA for an individual with one more allele C (1291) is 5.92 þ/ 2.68 (p-value ¼ 0.030). Conclusions: It is suggested that the SNP C1291G in the ADRA2A gene is significantly associated with bone density in our schizophrenic patients.
