Background: To explore the association of smoking status in schizophrenic patients and GAD67 gene.Methods: This is a multi-center, investigator-initiated, naturalistic study project. Here we enrolled 400 inpatients (299 M, 101F) meeting DSM-IV criteria for schizophrenia or schizoaffective disorder from two psychiatric hospitals in Taiwan. All subjects were evaluated for smoking status by using laboratory(Carbon monoxide level measurement in the expired air) and self-reporting after consent form completed. Four SNPs embedded within GAD67 gene includingrs3749034 (SNP1), rs2270335 (SNP2), rs2228598 (SNP4), rs769404 (SNP6)have been genotyped by DHPLC. Results: After controlling for age and BMI, the OR to be smoking for a female schizophrenic individual with one more allele T in GAD67 SNP6 is 0.23±0.11( p = 0.002). However, the significant association is not observed in male subjects. The other SNPs of GAD67 gene support the similar association with smoking status. Conclusions: It is suggested that the SNP6 in GAD67 gene is significantly associated with smoking status in our schizophrenic patients.
