Abstract: | Aim: The prevalence of illicit drug use in adolescents is generally much lower than that in adults. However, it remains seldom explored whether the contrast between the two groups would be diminished if only people with ever use of other psychoactive substances or psychological distress were compared. We aim to examine the lifetime use prevalence of illicit drugs conditional on other psychoactive substance use or depressive symptoms for adolescents and adults, respectively. Methods: Data from the 2014 and 2018 National Survey of Substance Use in Taiwan were pooled, totally 36,463 participants (8,043 adolescents and 28,420 adults). Information on illicit drug use, other psychoactive substance use (alcohol, tobacco cigarette, e-cigarette, and areca nut), and depressive symptoms (Center for Epidemiological Studies-Depression) were collected anonymously. Conditional lifetime prevalence of illicit drug use and prevalence ratio were calculated using software SAS 9.4 procedures that can address the complex survey design. Results: The lifetime prevalence of illicit drug use was 0.6% in adolescents and 1.5% in adults in the combined samples. The conditional prevalence of illicit drug use on users of one substance and its ratio to that in non-users of the substance was 1.7% (10.9) for alcohol, 5.7% (18.4) for tobacco cigarette, 7.0% (15.3) for e-cigarette, 5.1% (11.2) for areca nut in adolescents, whereas the corresponding figures were 2.2% (4.9) for alcohol, 4.3% (13.2) for tobacco cigarette, 10.6% (9.2) for e-cigarette, 6.1% (11.7) for areca nut in adults. Moreover, the corresponding figures for depressive symptoms were 4.9% (14.3) in adolescents and 4.9% (3.7) in adults. Conclusions: Despite having a lower overall prevalence of illicit drug use, adolescents would be equally likely to use illicit drug as adults if they have already used other psychoactive substances or having depressive symptoms. Our findings have implications for the prevention and intervention of illicit drug use among adolescents. |
